Carlos Hyde doesn’t have the hype of Saquon Barkley, and he shouldn’t stop the team from drafting Barkley. But he’s a nice committee piece.Chris Hubbard helps out an offensive line that suddenly needs a ton of it after Joe Thomas’ retirement.
Then there is Chris Smith, the versatility veteran defensive end who broke out with the Bengals last year. The in-trading between the two Ohio teams has picked up recently in large part thanks to former Bengals assistant coach Hue Jackson serving as Browns head coach, so Smith wasn’t a surprise.
Bryant has a cap hit of $16.5 million in 2018 before a built-in out in his contract. It’s entirely too much for wideout who turns 30 in November and hasn’t hit the 1,000-yard mark since 2014.
Granted, judging Bryant on yardage alone would be silly. So let’s slice it up some more. He scored six times in 2017, his lowest mark since 2015. He averaged 12.1 yards per catch, the worst mark of his career. He did this while catching 69 passes, the third-best mark of his career—but on 132 targets.
There’s a conversation worth having about Dak Prescott residing under center now. Maybe it isn’t fair to hit Bryant in the checkbook due to worse play under center. According to Rapoport, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t discuss a restructure with Bryant during their meeting ahead of the new year opening.
But he should.
They have to shore up the line in front of Cam Newton in as many ways possible.Luckily for the Panthers, proven guys like Slauson are still available, and they could always gamble on a rehab project like Luke Joeckel or Xavier Su’a-Filo.
Known as a conservative franchise content to stick with guys they’re familiar with, the Bengals stepped far out of their shell with the trade for offensive tackle Cordy Glenn. They also brought back tight end Tyler Eifert.
We can’t expect much more from the timid Bengals here. They have 11 draft picks and already addressed two major needs on the roster.
The first time Donald Trump publicly impugned the reputation of former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe was about three months after the bureau had begun investigating links between Trump锟斤拷s campaign and Russian interference efforts.
But Trump didn锟斤拷t know about that investigation at the time. His disparagement of McCabe 锟斤拷 disparagement…
But McCabe was not universally loved inside the bureau. Some agents resented him for what they felt was a rapid rise through the ranks in his 22 years there. And officials noted that misleading investigators is a fireable offense, though they were curious about how the evidence would show McCabe had done so.
But for me, this was about putting our team in the best position to go win a championship in the next few years, Brees said. … I’ve made it very clear from day one that I was always gonna be a New Orleans Saint as long as they would have me.
Aside from the Brees’ new contract, the Saints had two specific problem areas on defense in need of attention: linebacker and pass-rusher.
Demario Davis, who signed Ryan Zimmerman Womens Jersey three-year, $24 million contract, brings a different presence to the New Orleans linebacker corps. No one on the Saints roster is as quick diagnosing or physical defending the run. Davis experienced a career season with the New York Jets last year when he registered a team-high 135 tackles and five sacks. The 29-year-old defender does struggle in space. Even so, he’s still an upgrade over Manti Te’o.
Game Mens Joe Schobert Jersey My offer of employment to Mr. McCabe is a legitimate offer to work on election security, Pocan said in a statement. Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of American democracy and both Republicans and Democrats should be concerned about election integrity.
Horowitz, the inspector general, had been investigating broad allegations of misconduct in the Clinton email case since early last year, but he zeroed in on McCabe over the last few months.
McCabe, who briefly served as acting FBI director after Comey锟斤拷s firing, technically stepped down from his deputy post after now-director Christopher A. Wray was told of what the inspector general had found.
The Cubs first baseman spoke at a vigil for the 17 people who were shot to death Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Rizzo is a 2007 graduate of the school. It was reported that he and his family knew some of those who died.
He fought back tears as he recalled playing on Douglas’ fields and studying in its classrooms (video via MLB.com).
Limited Mens Lance Alworth Jersey Whitehead’s pass coverage was better Authentic Donte Whitner Jersey in 2017, but remains the weak spot in his game,The price tag could ultimately determine whether Whitehead returns, but of the team’s free agents, he’s near the top of list of guys who merit bringing back,The rest of the market is flush with middle linebackers, although veterans NaVorro Bowman and Zach Brown are capable of playing both inside and outside,Nigel Bradham is arguably the only upgrade to Whitehead among the outside linebacking options.
The Eagles linebacker is scheme-versatile and is comparable to Whitehead as a run stopper and blitzer, but better in coverage,A cheaper fit, who has a background with Lions coach Matt Patricia, is Jonathan Casillas.
Loaiza, 46, was arrested Friday and charged with possessing more than 20 kilograms of heroin and/or cocaine for purchase/sale and for transporting for sale narcotics and/or a controlled substance.
His bail, subject to change, was set at $200,000.
A native of Tijuana who attended high school in Imperial Beach, Calif., Loaiza pitched 14 seasons in the majors for eight teams from 1995-2008. His best season was with the White Sox in 2003 when he was 21-9 with a 2.90 ERA and finished second in AL Cy Young voting to the late Roy Halladay. He was an AL All-Star in 2003 and ’04.
Pharoh Cooper Limited Jersey The right-hander recorded doube-digit victories seven times and finished his career 126-114, having played for the Pirates, Rangers, White Sox, Blue Jays, A’s, Dodgers, Nationals and Yankees.
The Spurs (37-30) have lost 11 of their past 14 games and fell to the 10th spot in the Western Conference standings with Monday’s loss.
Castillo seems like a sleeper to me because he Womens Vincent Rey Jersey is not going among the top 10 at his position, and I rank him as he should be. While his batting average could go in several directions, it also could settle in at .260 with 17 home runs. Nothing wrong with that considering the investment. — Eric Karabell
Elite Jalen Mills Jersey Zunino, the catcher you’re practically guaranteed to get in Round 20 or later who has a legitimate chance at developing into a top-five backstop. — Tristan H. Cockcroft
Posey did not finish among the top 75 hitters on last season’s Player Rater, mainly thanks to steadily declining power that is not showing any hint of returning to past levels. To make him a top-75 option in drafts is risky, and not something I ever plan to do. Sanchez, for that matter, is also being chosen too aggressively. — Eric Karabell
I’ll see Kawhi [Tuesday], Popovich said. We’ll see how he’s feeling, and see how ready he is, and see how ready I think he is. And we’ll go from there.
The team reportedly had targeted a home matchup on Thursday against the New Orleans Pelicans as the date for Leonard’s potential return, but Leonard will not play Thursday, as first reported by Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday and confirmed by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
Youth Darqueze Dennard Jersey
Popovich was asked on Saturday about the report of Leonard’s return, and said, Well good for them. I’m glad they’re reporting that. I don’t know what they reported. I don’t hear. I don’t worry about reports.
With Seattle turning the page offensively to Brian Schottenheimer and having a ton of salary-cap issues, there’s no way the team can afford to re-sign Graham. At 31, Graham still will likely cost another team up to $8 million per season in what might be the final contract of his pro career.
Graham’s name has been bandied about for the cap-rich 49ers and Bears. But both San Francisco (George Kittle) and Chicago (Adam Shaheen) have second-year athletes they like at the position. Each team is a few moves away from becoming a contender, but not using that money at other positions of need and going for the luxury of Graham is unwise.
In 2013, when 10 intrepid members of the ESPN fantasy staff decided to start up a fantasy baseball dynasty league, I opted to select Jose Altuve in Round 5. This pick resulted in a heaping helping of snickering and ridicule when it was made. After all, the Houston second baseman was coming off a fairly lackluster second season in the majors, with a not-so-exciting second-half stat line of a .274 batting average, 2 homers, 10 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.
But it’s not about being heavily criticized. It’s about being proactive and seeing things before they happen.” So eight years later, Chapman got out of the seventh inning, then went to the mound to pitch the eighth inning of Game 6 of the World Series with the score still 7-2. Maddon wasn’t about to use up his best pitcher for one out, with two innings to go, no matter what the pitcher did two days earlier. Chapman set the Indians down in order in the eighth, using a total of 15 pitches between the two innings. The Cubs were one inning away from forcing a do-or-die Game 7.
The 33-year-old De Aza has a .260 career batting average, 51 homers and 258 RBIs for seven teams since breaking into the majors in 2007.
Rafael Devers, 3B, Boston Red Sox (ADP: 126.0): There’s an absolute hard line between the top three 3B — Arenado, Manny Machado and Kris Bryant — and the rest of the position. In a start-up dynasty draft, however, Devers would be the next hot corner resident on my list. He hit 30 HRs last season, across three levels of play, and that’s not including the pair of round-trippers he swatted in the ALDS against the Astros. Potentially batting between J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts could well yield you sixth-round value from a 21-year-old you might be able to keep on your roster for the next decade.
Ozzie Albies, 2B, Atlanta Braves (ADP: 160.1): Brandon Phillips didn’t fall on his face for the Braves last season, which kept Albies at Triple-A until August. Although he started slowly, over the final 28 games of the season, Albies hit .301 with 4 HR, 16 RBI and 6 SB. Given his 30-SB potential and a projected No. 2 spot in the batting order ahead of Freddie Freeman, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him generate top-five value at second base in 2018. Maybe he’s not going to have Trea Turner-sized buzz surrounding him, but I think he very well could end up in the same neighborhood on the Player Rater if everything falls just right.
The Washington Wizards are on a mission.
Bradley Beal scored 21 points, hitting a clutch 3-pointer and a free throw down the stretch, to help the Wizards hang on for a 107-104 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.
Otto Porter Jr. added 17 points and Markieff Morris 14 for Washington which stayed hot after snapping the Philadelphia 76ers’ seven-game winning streak Sunday with a 109-94 victory.
The Bucks nearly stormed back from a 93-76 deficit with 6:34 left. Indiana committed four turnovers during a 12-0 Milwaukee run that tightened what looked to be a blowout.
“We had some turnovers late in the game, a little careless with the ball,” Pacers coach Nate McMillan said. “You have to value every possession.”
Oladipo hit a runner in the lane with 1:13 left for a 98-92 lead to slow Milwaukee’s momentum. He also scored six straight Indiana points during a 14-1 spurt in the third that helped the Pacers build a double-digit edge in the fourth.
Orlando (19-43) ended a seven-game losing streak by impressively closing out a 115-106 overtime win over the Detroit Pistons on Friday. The Magic stopped their fourth losing streak of at least seven games by outscoring Detroit 22-7 in the final 10:57 of the game.
“We have the talent to win and I want this team to think we’re going to win,” Thomas said afterward. “We have the players in this locker room to win and the only thing we should be thinking about is trying to take that next step — and that’s get to the playoffs.”
Julius Randle added 25 points, Brandon Ingram added 19, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 18 and Kyle Kuzma finished with 16 points for the Lakers as they won in Miami for the first time since Feb. 10, 2008. Los Angeles shot 59 percent and made 16 of 29 from 3-point range.
The Lakers have won 16 of their past 23 games and have already eclipsed their win total from all of last season. Los Angeles has captured three straight games on the road.
The second half, not so much.
Magic: Rookie F Isaac Austin, who has not played since Dec. 26 due to a sore right ankle, will play in a NBA G League game Friday night. … Vucevic had missed 23 games with a fractured left hand. … Gordon had missed nine games (and the All-Star Slam Dunk contest) with a strained left hip flexor.
“The defense was bad, really bad in the first quarter,” Kanter said. “Coach came into the locker room and said one thing: `We are not going to watch any film. Just go out there and get loose and start the second half with energy.’ We have enough guys to shoot and score the ball. The most important for us right now is defense.”
“I get criticized for not playing defense. I have accepted that in the past. I’m not accepting it now,” Burke said. “I know I’m quick enough to play defense, I have the mentality to play defense and I know I can be a pest on the ball.”
While he didn’t play a single game in 2017 and has more mileage under his belt than most quarterbacks with 76 career starts, Andrew Luck is a singular presence who can spark an immediate turnaround. We saw this in 2012 when he teamed with first-year head coach Chuck Pagano to take a 2-14 team and push it to an 11-5 record as a rookie. He’ll have a similar task ahead of him in 2018, assuming he’s back to 100 percent after rehabbing the shoulder injury that cost him this past season.
2019 marks the first time the game has been played in Atlanta since 2000, when Tennessee’s Kevin Dyson was stopped half a yard short from giving the world its first-ever Super Bowl overtime. It will be the third time the game has gone to Georgia’s capital and the first to be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The stadium is less than 1 year old, but it’s no stranger to big games. MBS played host to 2017’s SEC Championship Game, which pushed the Georgia Bulldogs into the College Football Playoff over the Auburn Tigers. One month later, it was the setting for the CFP National Championship Game, where Alabama knocked off the Bulldogs in overtime after an epic comeback.
The Super Bowl is a massive event, with the entire week leading up to it being filled with happenings and as many ways as humanly possible for the NFL — and its sponsors — to make money. The festivities have been in full swing for some time now, but there will be one more big event before the game itself: the pregame show.
The majority of the expert panel here at SB Nation is taking the defending champions, with only Harry Lyles Jr. and Ryan Van Bibber thinking upset.
Two weeks ago, Geoff Schwartz, Jeanna Thomas, and Joel Thorman all correctly picked the Patriots and Eagles to win at home in the conference championships. All three are picking the Patriots to repeat as champions.
But no one at SB Nation did better over the course of the entire season than Lyles. His 175-91 record was a full three games better than anybody else, so his pick of the Eagles comes with a little extra weight.
Philadelphia will start Nick Foles, who took over at quarterback when Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending knee injury in December. But the Eagles’ best chance is to lean on their stingy defense Sunday.
Foles took over the starting role for the Eagles when Carson Wentz suffered a torn ACL. He finished the game with 373 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, and even caught a touchdown pass. It was the most prolific day of offense in Super Bowl history and the 41-33 final score was the second-most points ever scored in the big game.
The victory was the first Super Bowl title ever for the Eagles.
But it’s also OK to put aside the hate for a moment and appreciate just how ridiculously good these two have been for the last 17 years. To acknowledge that we’re not going to get to see this for too much longer. And admit that we might never see an NFL run like this ever again.
In less than three quarters, the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles topped the record for combined yardage in a Super Bowl. The previous record was 929 — set way back in Super Bowl 22 — when Washington and the Denver Broncos met 30 years ago.
Fantasy managers noticed his late-season breakthrough, but in the end his seasonal ERA was just 4.23.
Lucas Giolito, Chicago White Sox: His slight drop in average fastball velocity probably had a lot to do with his strikeout rate declining to a frighteningly low 19.0 percent in his seven big league starts in 2017, but bear in mind that he also had a well-better-than-league-average 11.4 percent swinging-strike rate that suggests he has considerable room for growth in the strikeout category in 2018.
A.J. Minter, Atlanta Braves: Granted, it occurred in only 60 total batters faced, but Minter’s 19.4 percent swinging-strike rate was the fourth highest of anyone in baseball last season who faced at least that many batters. Injuries, including a 2015 Tommy John surgery, have kept him from tallying a lot of innings as a pro, but he already might have the most natural talent of anyone in the Braves’ bullpen.
Luke Weaver, St. Louis Cardinals: Weaver’s underlying metrics suggested he pitched way better than that — his strikeout-to-walk rate alone was 4.93-1 — and he had one of the higher ground ball rates (51.7 percent) of any pitcher to meet all of the non-TBF command criteria.
We’re back to everything I’ve been talking about over the last few years. It lets me know that everything I’ve been saying has been correct for her to be having that type of reaction. We will definitely NOT shut up and dribble. I’m definitely not going to do that. I mean too much to society. I mean too much to the youth. I mean too much to the kids who feel like they don’t have a way out and need somebody to lead them out of the situation they’re in.
It’s more about maintaining his skills gains than actually improving, but a push to capture the third-in-line role (behind David Robertson) would help him better fill the holds column, and if he can somehow work his way into next-in-line status, he’d be an Aroldis Chapman injury away from regular saves and potential top-10 fantasy closer value.
Fast-forward to 2017, and noted physicist Alan Nathan wrote A Humidor at Chase Field: What’s Up With That? after the Diamondbacks announced their intentions. In this, Nathan revisited previous work published in 2011, corroborating those findings using Statcast data. Speaking in current parlance, Nathan determined using humidor-stored balls drops the mean exit velocity 2 mph. Further, he concluded homers should decline 25 to 50 percent in Chase Field.
Such a huge drop sent shock waves throughout fantasy baseball. How will this affect Arizona hitters and pitchers? Where should they be ranked?
A reduction in home runs is only part of the puzzle. Lowered exit velocity influences all batted balls. The better grip could lead to more whiffs and fewer walks. With respect to pitching, the challenge is deciphering how Chase Field will play in terms of runs.
There is plenty to love about the coaching job Sean McVay has done this season with the Los Angeles Rams.
He helped Jared Goff become a franchise quarterback and running back Todd Gurley an MVP candidate. He took a team that hadn’t had a winning season since 2003 and instantly transformed it into an NFC powerhouse. He made the Rams matter in L.A. and around the NFL.
In Carolina, Devin Funchess — the remaining big-and-slow Panthers WR — gets a volume boost, though he’s a pale imitation of Benjamin. This trade doesn’t mean Funchess is suddenly faster or has better hands. And in fact, Greg Olsen could return from his broken foot in a few weeks, and Carolina may have a more speed-oriented receiving attack in mind, utilizing the likes of Curtis Samuel, Christian McCaffrey and Russell Shepard more. In a week without byes, Funchess needs to play better before he emerges from the ranks of the WR3s.
McDermott lands in a far different situation in Buffalo. The Bills have not made a playoff appearance since the 1999 season. Ryan spent two seasons there attempting to get the team back to the postseason and couldn’t, failing to deliver on his pledge to make the Bills an on-field bully. Things looked particularly scattered at the end of the season when the team opted to sit down quarterback Tyrod Taylor for contractual reasons but then sent interim coach Anthony Lynn out to explain a decision in which he had not participated.
Lynn was the favorite for the job heading in. McDermott was coming off a season in Carolina in which the Panthers’ defense, minus inexplicably jettisoned cornerback Josh Norman, ranked 21st in the league. Carolina, coming off its Super Bowl appearance, failed to make the playoffs. But McDermott’s good work in previous seasons was not forgotten. He, like Joseph, had the advantage of being available right now. Teams with coaching vacancies like that, especially given the intense competition to fill out coaching staffs with top assistants.
